Summer’s fast approaching, which means so are summer internships. And it’s important to understand sooner than later that the jump from student to intern isn’t just a schedule change but a full identity shift—and most students walk into their internships completely unprepared.

Below are six student-to-intern pitfalls that nobody puts in an offer letter, which is exactly why they catch so many first-timers off guard.

1. Waiting to Be Told What to Do

College trains you to wait. Syllabus drops, you read it, you follow it. Deadline's posted, you hit it. That system works great in school. In an internship? It gets you quietly written off by week three.

Real workplaces are ambiguous. Priorities shift. Nobody’s going to send you a formatted task list every Monday morning—and if you’re sitting around waiting for one, that gets noticed. One of the most common transition pitfalls isn’t laziness; it’s passivity dressed up as patience.

The solution? Always ask questions that help you make the most of the internship. First week, ask your manager one direct question: “What does a successful intern look like to you?” Then actually use the answer.

2. The Networking Thing Everyone Skips

Most interns go head-down and stay there. Totally understandable—the work feels urgent, the environment is new, and reaching out to people you don’t know feels awkward. But walking away from a 10-week internship without a single real professional relationship? Genuinely a waste.

Two coffee chats a week. That’s the whole ask. Across departments, not just your immediate team. Connect on LinkedIn the same day you meet someone—not a week later when you can't remember their last name. Prioritize people doing the job you want in five years. Those conversations are low-pressure and disproportionately useful later when you’re actually in the job market and need someone to pick up the phone.

Also—and this is one of the transition pitfalls that only shows up in hindsight—the people you meet during an internship are the same people making hiring decisions later in your career. Play the long game now.

3. Communication Norms Are a Minefield

Here’s something that will surprise you: most interns don’t get dinged for bad work. They get dinged for how they communicate. Too casual in Slack. Informal subject lines. Replies that read like texts. Nobody corrects it—they just quietly adjust their opinion of you, and that’s worse.

Before you write anything to anyone in that office, read a few emails from senior staff first. Notice the tone, the structure, and how they phrase requests. Mirror it until you actually understand the culture. A startup where the CEO posts memes in the all-hands channel is a very different environment from a finance firm where everyone still signs off with “Best regards.” Getting this wrong creates an impression that’s almost impossible to walk back—especially in a short internship where you don't have time for a redemption arc.

4. Waiting Until the End for Feedback

The final review is too late. By week 10, there’s nothing left to fix. Whatever impression you made is already made. Yet most interns treat feedback like a grade they receive at the end rather than a tool they use throughout.

Around week four, ask for a check-in. Say it like this: “Is there anything I should be doing differently?” Not “How am I doing?”—that’s vague and puts the whole thing on your manager. Specific questions get specific answers. And the act of asking signals genuine self-awareness, which managers remember clearly when they're deciding whether to pass your name along to someone later.

5. The Exit Is Part of the Job

The last day comes, and most interns ghost. A few send a generic “thanks for the opportunity” email. Almost nobody does what actually matters—a specific, genuine note that references a real project or a real moment from the experience.

Send that note. Then follow up once every three months after you leave. Short message, no ask attached, just staying on the radar. Done consistently, that follow-up habit turns a ten-week gig into a real professional relationship. And real relationships are what actually move careers forward—not resume lines nobody reads carefully.

6. Sort the Logistics Early or Pay for It Later

Relocation is chaos. You’ve probably seen someone show up to a new city with three suitcases, no lease signed, and a start date in four days—and it does not go well. Exhaustion alone wrecks your first week before it even starts.

Get ahead of it. Moving companies like Pro Alliance Services can help by handling your physical move so you’re not burning energy on boxes and logistics when you should be mentally preparing for the job. Book your housing at least six weeks out, maybe earlier. Budget for first-month costs separately from your regular spending. Keep a work bag packed and accessible the moment you land.

Showing up sharp on day one is an advantage most interns throw away before they ever walk through the door. Sort this early, and you show up as someone who has their life together. That impression sticks.

A Final Note: What Knowing All This Now Actually Means

These transition pitfalls often happen because nobody explains that the rules have changed. School logic and workplace logic are genuinely different, and the gap between them is where most early-career stumbles live.

Catch these traps now, adjust how you show up, and the internship becomes a real career asset. That’s entirely possible. But it starts with knowing what you’re walking into.

Jordan Blake is a Relocation Strategy Advisor at a company specializing in residential and commercial moving.
